SAVVY SECOND HOME BUYERS FIRST TO DISCOVER EXCLUSIVE LIFESTYLE AT KIRKWOOD MOUNTAIN RESORT
Resort’s Proximity, Privacy, Activities & Amenities Attracting Northern Californians

(Kirkwood Mountain Resort, Kirkwood, Calif.) How is it that certain people just seem to be in the right place at the right time? When it comes to business deals, real estate, starting a trend, or finding the undiscovered gem that becomes the next hot spot.

When Brett Weisel first came to Kirkwood Mountain Resort as a young skier in 1987 it was an immediate revelation: the spectacular natural setting, the overhanging cliffs and the raw challenge of the mountain spurred his interest. Twenty years later it’s those same attractions, plus the allure of a rare and fleeting real estate opportunity to have a legacy home on the mountain.

Weisel, 38, a founding partner at investment bank Thomas Weisel Partners, and his wife, Ellyn, met while ski racing in New Hampshire. Now with three children, the family represents a niche of active second home buyers looking for that classic small town mountain ambiance combined with sophisticated amenities and a challenging mountain.

“It didn’t take long to convince a couple friends to join us in building at Kirkwood,” said Weisel. “Once they visited the resort, it didn’t take long for them to fall in love with it like we have.”

Word is now out among the second home savvy - especially from the Silicon Valley, on The Palisades, an exclusive area of 21 home sites literally on the mountain at Kirkwood. Lot sizes range from one-third to half-acre parcels and are priced from $695,000 to just under $1.2 million.

The renowned Tahoe area resort has been undertaking its most dramatic development plan in more than 20 years. Always regarded as a top skier’s mountain and a natural local’s retreat, Kirkwood is carefully adding real estate options and desired amenities while retaining its original appeal to the purist.

All 21 sites at The Palisades translate to legacy homes boasting an 8,000-foot elevation and an average annual snowfall of close to 500 inches. The resort’s real estate options and designs reflect the Kirkwood area itself - contemporary and rugged. Weisel’s architect is creating a rustic mountain home with natural stone and rock and naturally aged wood. Weisel chose to build his homes in The Palisades because of the spectacular views and easy access to the mountain via the new high-speed quad chairlift at Timber Creek.

Kirkwood is undertaking its most dramatic development plan in more than 20 years. Recent on-mountain improvements include a new high-speed quad chair lift and new lodge at Timber Creek. Planned in the near future is another new high-speed chairlift on the backside of the mountain; upgrade of the existing Chair No. 3; installation of a new quad chairlift originating from the Mountain Village to the top of Chair No. 2; and three surface lifts accessing several hundred acres of new terrain from the peak of well-known ridge tops Covered Wagon, Lookout Vista and Red Cliffs.

Additionally, new lodges, restaurants, ice skating, sledding, tube hills, swimming pools and fitness centers provide visitors an encompassing Tahoe mountain lifestyle.

Weisel knows a bit about the sport from his early childhood, college racing days and from his father, Thomas Weisel, the former Chairman of the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Foundation and Chairman of USA Cycling Development Foundation Board.

“Our family likes the fact we are not in bumper to bumper traffic to get to Kirkwood and we don’t have to deal with long lift lines once we get there,” said Weisel. “We can jump in the car and get there in a little over 3 hours. No airports, lines and Highway 88 is a beautiful drive through farm land and total wilderness.”

That trend is consistent with statistics from the National Association of Realtors that report typical vacation homeowners purchase within 220 miles from their primary residence with eight of ten second home buyers driving to their property.

“I think Kirkwood is the best mountain in Tahoe,” said Weisel. “They have the most snow fall, the runs are steep and long, the grooming is exceptional on the entire mountain and you rarely see a lift line. Unlike many other mountains, whether it’s a power or groomer day, Kirkwood has so much good terrain that the mountain does not get skied out. On a powder day, the amount of steep terrain opened up by the two new express chairs is amazing. Also, the quality of the snow is better, when it is raining at the other resorts around Tahoe, it is snowing at Kirkwood. We also chose to build in Kirkwood because of the beauty and the total experience. The sun always seems to be shining, you park the car and leave it, and everyone has a great time. I think there is a real scarcity of ski-in ski-out property around the country, and I think land in the Palisades will be very valuable in the future.”
